Checking a renter's CNIC before you hand over a car

A photocopy of the CNIC in a drawer is a formality. It proves the renter had a card. It does not tell you that the same person took a Civic from a shop in Gujranwala in March and returned it three weeks late with a fresh dent, or did not return it at all.

What to check at the counter

• The CNIC itself, front and back, and the face against the person in front of you.
• A second document: driving licence, and for out-of-town renters a home address you can call.
• A guarantor with a phone number that answers while the renter is still standing there.
• The renter's history with your own shop: previous rentals, late returns, unpaid balances.

The check that only a network can do

Your own register cannot tell you about the shop across town.
